The management of Kotoka International Airport has confirmed an incident that took place on Sunday, September 22, at the Terminal 3 Departure Hall, where smoke was seen coming from a passenger’s luggage around 3:27 p.m.
According to reports, the luggage was found at the baggage wrap area, prompting swift action from the Aviation Security Department’s Operations Room. The security team quickly isolated the bag, and passengers were evacuated from the terminal in line with the Ghana Airports Company Limited’s (GACL) Emergency Operations procedures.
In an official statement, KIA management revealed that the passenger connected to the luggage has been handed over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for further questioning.
The GACL also took the opportunity to remind travelers that carrying batteries in their luggage is against International Civil Aviation Regulations. Any baggage found to contain such prohibited items will be confiscated, and the owner will be referred to the authorities.
The airport management expressed their gratitude to the passengers in the departure hall for their cooperation during the evacuation, reaffirming that the safety of all passengers is their top priority. Operations at the terminal have since returned to normal.
