Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, who resigned as Trade Minister today, contested for the flagbearership position of the New Patriotic Party in 2007 and lost. He garnered 32.3% of the total votes as opposed to Akufo-Addo’s 47.96%.They were the two best performers out of seventeen candidates. Imagine that–17 candidates desirous of power and thinking they were the best people possible to lead Ghana. It was unprecedented.
Sixteen years have passed since then, and Alan Cash remains interested in leading the New Patriotic Party. Standing in his way are the Vice-President Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong and other members of government.
If Akufo-Addo had never become president, we would probably be referring to him as the best president we never had–considering his activism, human rights advocacy and rhetorics during Rawlings’ civilian administration. Time has revealed all truths now and power has shown us the man’s true colours. Would we have gotten something different, something better, if Alan Cash had won that 2007 election instead?
We can’t be sure about that, but I am sure our corrupt Bible-verse pushing minister wouldn’t have gotten anywhere close to managing state funds and even taking on a part time role as Trade Minister. It’s ludicrous and mind-boggling.
If I was an NPP delegate, I will vote for Alan. He is the best in a pool of very poor potential presidential materials.
