American music icon Stevie Wonder has sworn the oath of allegiance and become a Ghanaian citizen.
Stevie Wonder received a warm welcome upon his arrival in Ghana, where he was greeted with music and dancing at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), Terminal 3, by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) led by CEO Akwasi Agyeman.
During his arrival, he joined in with the local drummers, tapping along to their rhythms on what appeared to be a kidi drum. He then shook hands with all the drummers, displaying a heartfelt smile.
Wonder’s visit to Ghana, facilitated under the Beyond the Return program by the government, marks a significant step. Dressed in a black ensemble adorned with a kente sash, Wonder arrived in Accra as part of his decision to permanently relocate to Ghana. In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist cited political unrest in America as his reason for the move. He had previously expressed his desire to move to Ghana in 1994, praising the sense of community he felt in the country.
In a historic ceremony coinciding with his 74th birthday on May 13, 2024, Wonder took the Oath of Allegiance and received Ghanaian citizenship at the Jubilee House, Ghana’s presidential palace. The ceremony, presided over by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been celebrated by many on social media.
Stevie Wonder, renowned for his musical talents, including playing the piano, drums, and harmonica from a young age, boasts an impressive array of achievements, including 25 Grammy Awards.
