The Mahama 2024 Campaign has warned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against attempts to pull down or obstruct the billboards of its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, or NDC parliamentary candidates. The Campaign team reported that the Chief Executive of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) had removed a billboard of Mr. Mahama, which was legally mounted by Alliance Media in Tema.
In a statement on Friday, July 19, the Mahama 2024 Campaign described the act as “unacceptable” and a “needless provocative attempt to raise the political temperature in the country.” They emphasized that Alliance Media, a legally registered Ghanaian advertising business, has the right to mount billboards and pays the required fees to TMA and other assemblies.
The Campaign team urged Alliance Media to take legal action against the TMA and warned the TMA boss and the NPP that such actions could lead to political clashes and violence, which are harmful to the country’s democracy. They cited a similar incident in the Ablekuma North constituency, where an NDC parliamentary candidate’s billboard was blocked by the NPP.
The Mahama 2024 Campaign called on institutions like the National Peace Council and civil society organizations to take note of these provocations. They cautioned that if these actions persist, they will instruct their members to take necessary measures to prevent such acts across the country.
The Campaign urged the NPP to campaign peacefully and respect the rights of others to advertise their political candidates and messages. They reiterated that violence and property destruction have no place in political discourse, and emphasized the need for “peace and decorum” in the run-up to the December elections, as noted by President Mahama.
