The Supreme Court has issued a stay of execution on Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, restoring the affected MPs to full parliamentary duties.
Parliament has been instructed to recognize the four MPs—Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central), and Andrew Asiamah (Fomena)—until the Court delivers its final ruling on the case.
The ruling follows an ex parte application by NPP MPs, who argued that the Speaker’s decision unfairly altered the balance of power in Parliament. The stay will remain in effect beyond the 10-day request initially filed, pending the outcome of the Supreme Court’s full hearing.
The case was presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, alongside Justices Mariama Owusu, Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Ernest Yao Gaewu, and Yaw Darko Asare. Lawyers Paa Kwesi Abaidoo and former Attorney General Joe Ghartey represented the NPP MPs.
The Speaker’s ruling, which shifted the NPP to the Minority and handed the NDC a slim majority, has been temporarily nullified by the Supreme Court’s intervention.
