Teachers charge at GES Council Boss Nsowah over his unfortunate comments

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has demanded an apology from the Chairman of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council, Mr Michael Nsowah, for his “unfortunate” comments about teachers with reference to their on-going strike action.

According to GNAT, the comments by Mr Nsowah describing “Ghanaian Teachers as people that the current Government is having pity on” was inappropriate and downplays efforts of hardworking teachers.

In a statement circulating on social media, authorized by the Central Regional chairman of GNAT, Dr Isaac Owusu, and cited by ghananewsonline.com.gh, he asserted that, the teachers are rightfully clamoring for payments due them for working as recognized by the labour Act, 2003.

“What we are demanding from the Government for our members are the legitimate right under the Labour Act, 2003 section 68 under the heading EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK”.

The provision states that, “every Worker shall receive equal pay for equal work without distinction of any kind”

According to the union, their demands are backed by the law and should not be considered as “begging” as Mr Nsowah implied.

They therefore called on “Mr. Michael Nsowah to render an unqualified apology to Teachers in the Country.”
