The Self-Serving Hypocrisy in Our Politics Is Enough to Make a Person Throw Up

Former President John Dramani Mahama has described as ‘unfortunate’ the withdrawal of the Bill on the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

According to Mr. Mahama, President Nana Akufo-Addo’s action has unfairly robbed Ghanaians of the opportunity to elect their own MMDCEs who would have been accountable to them and not the President who appoints them.
President Mahama said this when he was addressing a meeting with the Christian Council of Ghana at their secretariat in Accra recently.

The Daily Searchlight is disgusted with these effusions coming from former President Mahama. Indeed, it is a matter of public record that ahead of the referendum to allow MMDCEs to be elected, Mr. Mahama and his party advocated for a ‘NO” vote, because, according to them, allowing political parties to play a role in local level elections may lead to anarchy.

This is in spite of the total lack of evidence that political party participation in presidential and parliamentary elections has led to anarchy in our country.

We believe that this pronouncement from Mr. Mahama is very hypocritical and self-serving, intended only to score points after he had pushed for the abrogation of the whole process.

We at the Daily Searchlight have continued to say that the withdrawal of the referendum has led to the loss of a great opportunity for this country, but we believe that it should not lie in the mouths of destructive elements like Mr. Mahama to join the mourners at the wake of the referendum, because he was one of the people who helped to kill the process.
