Zoomlion Ghana Limited has justified the payment of ¢250 to its sweepers across the country after the meagre amount paid to them was highlighted during a protest by the workers over unpaid allowances.
In an interview, Emma Adwoa Appiah Osei-Duah the Director of Communication and Corporate Affairs of the company said under the current contract, Zoomlion is paid GH₵ 850 per sweeper by the government through YEA.
Out of this amount, she said GH₵ 600 is used to cater for management and logistics while GH₵ 250, is paid to the workers as allowance for their four-hour daily shift.
“Some go into logistics, others for the servicemen, that is management fee and the GH ¢250 is for the payment of the allowances to the operatives. These operatives work for four hours a day so that is the amount that has been agreed upon in the contract to be paid to them,” she told Starr Fm.
On the delay in the payment, she cited the contract arrangement with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
“We have an arrangement with the YEA to manage people they bring to work with us in the sanitation module. The arrangement… is for us to pay them ahead and then we are reimbursed.”
Due to challenges that accompany the payment process, she disclosed the YEA and her outfit have initiated talks for a review.
“As I speak, there is a discussion between the two parties that run the contract regarding the payment of the operatives.”
