U-20 Women’s World Cup: Ghana exit the tournament after losing 2-0 to Japan in second group game 

The results means Ghana for the sixth time has failed to make it pass the group stage of the competition and will play their last group game against the Netherlands at the Estadio de Nacional de Costa Rica on Wednesday, August 17th 2022. 

Ghana’s hopes of making it to the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup quaterfinals came to an end as they lost 2-0 to Japan at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto on Sunday in their second group game.

Two penalties from Maika Hamano in the second half got the job done for the Asians and dashed the hopes of the Princesses who were looking to bounce back from the 4-0 defeat to USA in their opening group game.

The Princesses could not find thier rhythm, failing to trouble the opposition goalkeeper for most parts of the game with Japan dominating possession.

They did however keep the game scoreless in the first half. Back from recees, Japan found their way through right after the hour mark following a penalty decision.

Hamano stepped up and delivered expertly from 12 yards and doubled the lead after being gifted wjth a similar opportunity in the 72nd minute and made no mistake.

Japan leads the group on 6 points, USA second on 3 points with the Netherlands coming in third with 0 points as Ghana places rock bottom on 0 points.

The results means Ghana for the sixth time has failed to make it pass the group stage of the competition and will play their last group game against the Netherlands at the Estadio de Nacional de Costa Rica on Wednesday, August 17th 2022.
