The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) has said that it will focus on creating more jobs in waste management under the Green Jobs Project.
According to Director of Projects at the Ministry, Ernest Berko, the ministry, the Green Jobs Project will help reduce the teeming unemployed youth in the country.
Statistics put out by the International Labour Organization, more than 18 million jobs can be created from waste management.
In the case of Ghana, more than half a million youth are into waste management. However, the management of the waste has become a major a problem.
Under the Green Job policy, government through the MELR has initiated steps to create adequate jobs for the economy.
Based on that, the Ministry has mobilized some waste collectors to educate them about green jobs.
Mr Ernest Berko said, the Ministry will not relent on its job creation agenda.
“The Green Jobs Project is actually something that we can promote to create employment across the sectors, it is not only about waste. Currently, as we speak waste management presents a good opportunity for us to start from since we have people already in the business all they need is to be organized and be supported in what they do,” he stated.
Director of Policy Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Gloria Noi Borteley underscored the role of the Ministry in dealing with the informal sector.
“This is to showcase the project and business model that demonstrate the commitment through job creation and waste management and recycling sector through cooperative and we will also identify challenges and barriers hindering the growth and explore ways to manage it,” she stated.
