As Daxo, or Overlord of the Aflao Traditional States of Ghana, Togo, and Benin, and President of the Forum of Kings, Queens, Sultans, Sheikhs, Princes, and Traditional Leaders of Africa, I address the pressing issue of terrorism and the recent attacks in parts of Northern Togo.
Understanding the nature of terrorists, their methods of operation, and the importance of individual vigilance in supporting government efforts is paramount.
Defining Terrorism:
A terrorist is an individual or member of a group who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, to pursue political aims. They aim to create fear and instability, achieving their ideological, religious, or political goals through coercion.
Methods of Operation:
Terrorists employ various tactics, including:
1. Bombings and Explosions: Targeting public places to cause maximum casualties.
2. Armed Attacks: Using weapons against civilians and government institutions.
3. Kidnappings and Hostage Taking: Abducting individuals for political demands or ransom.
4. Cyber Attacks: Disrupting infrastructure and spreading propaganda digitally.
5. Propaganda and Recruitment:Using media to spread extremist ideologies and recruit members.
6. Insurgency and Guerrilla Warfare: Engaging in prolonged conflict against state forces.
Vigilance and Responsibility:
Citizens must be vigilant and proactive in combating terrorism. This includes:
1. Awareness and Education: Understanding radicalization signs and educating communities.
2. Reporting Suspicious Activities: Observing surroundings and reporting unusual activities.
3. Community Engagement: Promoting social cohesion and resilience against extremism.
4. Supporting Security Forces: Cooperating with and supporting security personnel.
5. Counteracting Propaganda: Spreading messages of peace and countering extremist narratives.
As the United Nations (UN) emphasizes, terrorism threatens international peace and security, undermines human rights, and impedes socio-economic development” (UN, 2020). The UN Secretary-General has also highlighted that “terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security” (UN, 2021).
Conclusion:
It was a shameful day for terrorism because the Togolese have emerged victorious and stronger than before. As the UN Security Council has urged, “all Member States must prevent and suppress the financing of terrorist acts and refrain from providing any form of support to entities or persons involved in such acts” (UN, 2001).
Unity and vigilance are our strongest weapons against terrorism. By supporting government initiatives and working together, we can ensure a safer environment for all. Each individual effort contributes to eradicating terrorism and ensuring peace.
Let us stand together in this fight. Your vigilance and cooperation are invaluable in protecting our societies. We support governments against external aggression and advise political aspirants to seek power through democratic means rather than terrorism.
