Uproar against Nat’l Cathedral same as when Akosombo Dam, Tema Motorway were being built – Exec. Director

“[Kwame] Nkrumah had the same problem with the Akosombo [and] with Motorway. [Former] President Kufuor had the same thing with the Jubilee House. People even said that he wants to turn it into a chicken coop.“

Executive Director of the National Cathedral of Ghana Dr Paul Opoku-Mensah says the seeming public uproar against the National Cathedral Project is similar to the reaction major national projects like the Akosombo Dam and the Tema Motorway received.

He told journalists that Ghanaians should rather see the economic potentials of these projects and refrain from politicising them.

Work on the project has been suspended as a result of lack of funds.

The National Cathedral Secretariat says renewed fund-raising drives are scheduled in the coming days to pool enough funds for the project to have “predictable” timelines.

But the Executive Director said the Secretariat, and by extension, the President, is not disturbed by the turn of events.

“One of the things we have always done as a country is that we allow such projects almost to be captured [in politics],” Dr Opoku-Mensah observed.

“[Kwame] Nkrumah had the same problem with the Akosombo [and] with Motorway. [Former] President Kufuor had the same thing with the Jubilee House. People even said that he wants to turn it into a chicken coop.

“But we have to insist that as a country, when other countries are thinking of going to the moon, we drag ourselves down instead of we looking at the importance of some of these infrastructure that will turn around our country.”

He stressed that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is focused on getting the project completed.
