Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Robert Yaw Amankwah, has reacted to the alleged illegal mining activities of Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Wontumi.
In a statement issued by the Public Affairs Ministry on Friday, September 30, 2022, the company owned by the regional chairman of the ruling party, Antwi Boasiako alias Wontumi, has been engaging in mining activities in the forest without a permit.
Many Ghanaians have called on the government to punish Wontumi to show its commitment to fighting the galamsey menace.
Speaking in an interview with Oyerepa Online, the former chairman disagreed that Wontumi should be used as a scapegoat.
“What is a scapegoat? In my understanding, using someone as a scapegoat means punishing the person regardless of whether he/she is guilty or not. The laws are there. We should allow it to work”. He said.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo is so lenient in dealing with illegal mining because of the unemployment rate in the country.
