The Chairman of the Committee investigating the violent clash that erupted during the Parliament’s Appointments Committee sitting on Thursday, January 30, and Friday, January 31, 2025, Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has confirmed that the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has instructed the committee to resume its public hearing.
Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Mr. Bedzrah clarified that the directive to suspend proceedings, initially attributed to the Speaker, was later revealed to have been orchestrated by the Minority.
“I inquired from both the Minority and Majority leaders. The Majority Leader, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, stated that he did not recall the Speaker explicitly instructing a suspension of the sitting,” Mr. Bedzrah explained.
He further noted that while the Minority Leader, Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, had raised concerns during discussions with the Speaker, he had left before a final decision was made. As a result, the committee had opted to wait for the Speaker’s return to clarify the matter.
“However, later that night, the Speaker called and made it clear that we cannot halt our work. He directly instructed the clerk that the investigation should proceed without delay,” Mr. Bedzrah disclosed.
Following the Speaker’s directive, the committee will resume its public hearing today, Friday, February 7, 2025.
