Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has raised serious concerns about the integrity of Ghana’s voter register, warning that irregularities could compromise the 2024 general elections. He has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to immediately conduct a thorough audit to resolve these issues and ensure a credible electoral process.
“We believe that the voter register must be audited. The level of tampering we’ve observed so far makes it impossible to proceed without a proper review. This audit will help us understand the extent of the problem and fix the system,” Dr. Forson said during a nationwide demonstration organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra.
Dr. Forson revealed alarming discrepancies in his constituency, including the addition of approximately 3,000 names to the transfer register and multiple registrations that inflated the voter roll by about 5,000 names. He emphasized that these irregularities warrant urgent intervention by Parliament.
NDC leadership is pressing for reforms within the EC to address these issues before the elections. Dr. Forson warned that failure to audit the register could raise doubts about the legitimacy of the 2024 elections, potentially undermining public confidence in the EC’s ability to conduct a free and fair vote.
The Minority Leader has threatened to cause a recall of Parliament to compel the EC to act, stressing the need for immediate steps to safeguard the credibility of the upcoming elections.
