WANEO Commends Ghana’s Electoral Commission for Transparency and Inclusivity ahead of 2024 Elections

The collective efforts of these groups, WANEO emphasized, are vital in securing a credible voters' register and ensuring peaceful elections in 2024.

The West Africa Network of Election Observers (WANEO), in partnership with the Defence Network for Democracy (DEFNED) and other Pan-African civil society organizations, has applauded the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) for its commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

In a press statement issued on October 3, 2024, WANEO commended the EC’s executive leadership and staff for their efforts in ensuring a credible voters’ register nationwide. The organization praised the EC’s administrative innovations, which have fostered broad stakeholder engagement in Ghana’s democratic process. According to WANEO, these actions have strengthened trust and boosted confidence among the public and key stakeholders, laying the groundwork for the successful consolidation of Ghana’s democracy, peace, and security.

WANEO also encouraged the EC to continue its efforts, urging all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, religious institutions, traditional authorities, the media, and the diplomatic community, to support the EC’s constitutional mandate. The collective efforts of these groups, WANEO emphasized, are vital in securing a credible voters’ register and ensuring peaceful elections in 2024.

The statement highlighted that the EC’s work aligns with several international frameworks, including the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance (ACDEG), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030). WANEO reaffirmed its commitment to working with the EC and all stakeholders to uphold Ghana’s democratic principles.

Rev. Kingsley Oheneba Amoah-Asihene, Executive Director of WANEO and Chairman of DEFNED, signed the statement, pledging continued support for the EC’s efforts to ensure peaceful, inclusive, and transparent elections.
