Ibrahim Sannie, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso North in the Greater Accra region has said that he will not allow politics to break the amity between himself and his brother, Yussif Issaka Jajah.
He says he and Yussif, the Member of Parliament and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the constituency are more than friends since they’ve lived peacefully for many years.
According to him, they relationship between them is beyond politics and would not allow the quest for power to substitute their amity for enmity.
His comments come on the back of the clash that ensued between supporters of the NPP and NDC at Mamobi on Sunday, October 13, 2024, where two persons were shot with six others also sustaining other injuries.
In an interview with Captain Smart on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Monday, October 14, 2024, he condemned what ensued at the walk, saying it is something that should never occur again as the election nears.
When asked if he would be bold enough to condemn the attack, he said “Captain, I condemn 100 per cent. My brother Jajah can tell you even when the police arrived, I condemned it. I said this shouldn’t happen again because, going into this contest, Jajah and I are like cousins. It is not like we are friends. His brothers are my direct cousins so it’s not like we are friends. So I won’t let politics [divide us] because we are more than politics.”
A routine weekend political campaign walk at Mamobi in Accra on Sunday turned violent, leading to two people being shot and four others sustaining injuries.
The clash occurred between supporters of the NPP and NDC following what was initially intended to be a peaceful event.
The keep-fit walk, which both parties typically organise every weekend as part of their campaign activities, ended abruptly when a group of motorbike riders from one side encountered the supporters from the other side.
Eyewitnesses reported that a verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
“After our peace walk, it is rather unfortunate that this happened,” said one of the eyewitnesses who said it was motorbike riders from the NDC side that confronted the supporters of the NPP.
According to him, the clash intensified when one of the NPP supporters allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired several shots.
Two of the injured victims were rushed to the Police Hospital, while four others are being treated at the Mamobi Hospital.
The altercation reportedly began as a dispute over which group would pass through a particular area first but escalated into violence.
The Regional Police Command was deployed to contain the situation as tensions rose, preventing further violence.
The Director-General of Police Operations, COP. Mohammed Fuseini Suraji while speaking to the NDC group indicated that investigation into the incident is underway, calling for calm and urging both parties to exercise restraint.
