The Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) has expressed surprise and concern over recent calls by certain stakeholders urging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo not to assent to the newly passed Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) law. TAGG believes that these objections do not reflect the broader interests of the trading community.
In a statement signed by TAGG President Kwadwo Amoateng and Vice President Samuel Asare Addo, the group emphasized that the GSA has been actively engaging stakeholders since the law’s passage. TAGG highlighted the GSA’s commitment to ensuring that the Legislative Instrument (L.I.), which will operationalize the law, is crafted with input from the business community to make Ghana a competitive trading hub.
TAGG reassured the public that the new law is designed to benefit the broader shipping and logistics sector. They urged President Akufo-Addo to carefully review and expedite the process of assenting to the law, arguing that any attempts to obstruct its implementation would likely serve the interests of a minority rather than the majority of traders.
“We believe that the law will bring better fortunes for shippers and the commercial shipping business in Ghana. We encourage any stakeholders with concerns to participate in the ongoing discussions with the GSA to ensure that their voices are heard,” the statement concluded.
TAGG remains optimistic that the law will enhance Ghana’s position in the global commercial shipping industry and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
