“We’ll not sign any peace pact until the killers from the 2020 elections are arrested and prosecuted” – NDC

The peace accord has been approved by a number of stakeholders and is intended to guarantee that political leaders would uphold peace both during and after the elections.

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed the party’s stance against signing the peace agreement put out by the National Peace Council in advance of the elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

The peace accord has been approved by a number of stakeholders and is intended to guarantee that political leaders would uphold peace both during and after the elections.

The NDC, however, is adamant in its rejection.

As he toured the Bono Region’s Banda Constituency for his campaign, Mr. Nketia made it plain that the NDC would only sign the deal if those responsible for the fatalities and violence during the 2020 general elections were apprehended and prosecuted.

“We will not sign this document until the killers from the 2020 elections are arrested and prosecuted.

The government has failed to hold those criminals, disguised in security uniforms, accountable because they acted in the interest of the ruling party during the last elections,” he added.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia used the unfortunate death of an innocent teacher in Banda before the 2020 elections to highlight the party’s position that future peace deals cannot be established unless justice is done.

“People lost their lives, and nothing has been done about it. Yet, you want me to sign a document so that the same atrocities can be repeated in 2024.

Those responsible for these heinous crimes against democracy are walking free, while the families of victims continue to suffer,” Asiedu Nketia stated.

In order to seek justice for previous election violence before agreeing to future peace agreements, he said the NDC’s reluctance to join the peace treaty is an important position ahead of the 2024 elections.
