He added that, Rawlings will “issue a statement on the developments in due course”

Independence declaration

On 16th November, 2019, the secessionist group, HSGF declared “Western Togoland” independent from Ghana.

According to the leader of the group, Mr Charles Komi Kudzodzi, the intended separation was due to the neglect by the government of Ghana to the plight of persons in the region

This declaration which has been described by the government as “unlawful” and disruptive of the nations peace has led to some tension and series of arrest.

It has also sparked a nationwide argument on the veracity of the secessionist group’s claims and how to properly deal with the sensitive issue.

Some reports linked the former president Rawlings to the happenings, asserted that he raised the issued concerning the breakaway declaration to the government.

This according to the former president, is untrue as he is yet to publicly comment on the issue.
