Abena Tawiah, a self-acclaimed 17-year-old resident of Afari in the Ashanti Region has been arrested for allegedly torturing her two-year-old stepson with heated electric water-heater on Saturday, November 23, 2019, ABC News can report.
The suspect is reported to have plugged and heated the water-heater before using it on the body of the 2-year-old stepson.
The boy sustained varying degrees of injuries on his cheeks, chin, nose, and private part.
Purported videos of the 2-year-old showed what appeared to be marks of physical assault, all over his body as he wept and groaned in pain.
His mouth, nose, and cheek were swollen.
Neighbors later indicated that the step mum of the boy has been maltreating him.
Abena Tawiah, who went into hiding after the November 23 incident, was arrested Wednesday, November 27 by the Nkawie District Police Command.
According to the report, she allegedly denied using the heater on the boy, claiming the wounds were the results of diseases he suffered when interrogated.
“We took her to court immediately she was arrested. She told the court she is 17 years so she was remanded into police custody to reappear on December 5, 2019,” DSP Sylvanus Dalmeida of the Nkawie DOVVSU told reporters in Kumasi.
Her pleads have been reserved as investigations into the case are currently ongoing. The boy lives with his stepmother at Afari, a community in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti region.
The boy has meanwhile been taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
