Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reiterated the party’s resolute in hitting an 85% share of total votes in the Ashanti region in the December 2024 polls.
Chairman Wontumi believes the event of 2008 cannot repeat itself in 2024 because since the two elections have different dynamics.
According to Wontumi, the government is now performing so breaking the 8 is a possibility.
“In 2008 when the NPP had finished its eight years term and looking to breaking the 8, there were a lot of despondency. But now, the narrative is different because the government is performing and meeting the expectations of the people.
“This gives us confidence that breaking the 8 is possible this time around,” he told host of Akoma FM’s ‘GhanAkoma‘ Sir John.
To Wontumi, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot be an option for the people of the Ashanti Region.
“Mahama has nothing good to offer this region. During his time, he introduced Capitation under the NHIS and this created a lot of problems for the people, we still remember; he neglected the people of the Ashanti region,” he indicated.
Mr. Boasiako believes ongoing massive road projects in the Ashanti region will give the ruling party a massive advantage over the opposition.
“Look at the massive road projects this government is embarking, Sir John,” he said.
The ruling NPP is yet to hit a 77% mark in its stronghold since the inception of the party in 1992. The party’s best performance came in the years 2004 and 2016 when it recorded 76% each in those elections.
Candidate John Agyekum Kufuor led the party in 2004 with the current president, Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also winning in the 2016 elections.
