Yendi MP reveals: Over 100 NPP MPs endorse Dr Bawumia as flagbearer

“As for me and the majority of the Majority MPs, we are rooting for the Vice President, and it is a fact, and we are bold enough to say that we want Mahamudu Bawumia to take us to the promised land and also unite the party after the elections.

Yendi MP, Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama, has revealed that a lot of MPs from the governing New Patriotic Party are rooting for Dr. Bawumia to be elected the next flagbearer of the party.

This comes as a major boost for the flagbearer ambition of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia that the majority caucus in Parliament will offer such massive endorsement.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, the Yendi MP said among those who declared their intentions to contest the flagbearer slot, Dr Bawumia stands tall.

He said though the other aspirants are equally qualified, the Vice President is the right person to help the party break the 8 and take the country to the promised land.

“As for me and the majority of the Majority MPs, we are rooting for the Vice President, and it is a fact, and we are bold enough to say that we want Mahamudu Bawumia to take us to the promised land and also unite the party after the elections.

“Although we are yet to meet the other presidential hopefuls, it was clear during our meeting with the Vice President that everybody in the room wants Dr Bawumia, and we are not saying that everyone wants him, but at least, over 100 MPs want him.”

The Chairman of Parliament’s Muslim Caucus also expressed optimism “that Bawumia will win [the presidential primaries] with over 80 per cent of the votes.”

The Vice President in a meeting with members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, disclosed his intention to contest the NPP Presidential Primaries on November 4, 2023.

Dr Bawumia is expected to face stiff competition from former Trade Minister, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen and Member of Parlaiuemht for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong.

The others include former Agric Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong, former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko and former Mampong MP, Francis Addai Nimoh.
