Yohuno’s appointment as Deputy IGP faces fresh suit

President Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, appointed COP Yohuno as Deputy IGP in charge of Operations.

The appointment of Commander of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been slapped with another suit  to challenge its legality.

The plaintiff, Emmanuel Felix Mantey, in his suit is praying the court to stop COP Yohuno to stop carrying himself as Deputy Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service.

President Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, appointed COP Yohuno as Deputy IGP in charge of Operations.

A statement from the presidency signed by its Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, indicated that the appointment was made pursuant to an advice by the Police Council at its meeting held Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

The statement noted that the Council acknowledged COP Yohuno’s exceptional credentials and dedication to duty as one of the major qualities considered for his appointment.

But in a writ filed at the High Court Thursday, August 01, 2024, the petitioner, Felix Mantey, is seeking an order to stop Mr. Yohuno not to carry himself as or act in the role of Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.

He is also is also praying the court to restrain the Attorney-General and the Police Council from carrying out any actions in furtherance of the appointment of COP Tetteh Yohuno for the role assigned to him by the President.

Mr. Mantey is praying for an “Order of judicial review for the following reliefs: a. An order of prohibition restraining COP Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno from acting or purporting to act in the role of Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.

“An order of prohibition restraining the Respondents from carrying out any actions in furtherance of the appointment of COP Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno as ‘Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.”

His suit followed an earlier one filed y private legal practitioner, Justice Abdulai, which was also against the A-G and the Police Council indicating that the appointment is inconsistent with the Constitution.
