Bawumia’s Broken Promises: Why his new Pledges to Persons with Disabilities Lack Credibility

Dr. Bawumia's campaign promises in 2016, as running mate to President Akufo-Addo, remain largely unmet, raising questions about his credibility. Among the promises that have failed to materialize

As the Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Jomoro Constituency, I, Joel Samuel Ndede, must address the recent promises made by the Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, regarding scholarships for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). While it is commendable to propose tertiary scholarships for PWDs, Ghanaians should closely scrutinize Dr. Bawumia’s record of unfulfilled promises and approach his latest pledge with caution.

Legacy of Unfulfilled Promises by Dr. Bawumia and the NPP Government

Dr. Bawumia’s campaign promises in 2016, as running mate to President Akufo-Addo, remain largely unmet, raising questions about his credibility. Among the promises that have failed to materialize are:

1. One District, One Factory:

A flagship policy that has fallen far short of expectations. Many districts are still waiting for their promised factories, with no clear timeline for completion.

2. One Village, One Dam:

This project aimed at providing irrigation to villages has not delivered the desired results, leaving many communities without the water resources they were promised.

3. One Million Dollars Per Constituency:

The promise of significant funding for each constituency has not been fulfilled, leading to inadequate development across the country.

4. Reduction of Inflation Rates:

Despite promises of economic stability, inflation has continued to rise, impacting the cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.

5. Arresting the Dollar-to-Cedi Rate:

The Cedi’s instability against major currencies has persisted, despite Dr. Bawumia’s assurances of economic management.

6. Creating Jobs for the Youth:

Unemployment, especially among the youth, remains a critical issue, with little progress made under Dr. Bawumia’s watch.

7. Introduction of Nuisance Taxes:

High taxes on consumables, E-levies, and import duties have only worsened the financial burden on Ghanaians.

8. Collapsing Financial Institutions:

Several financial institutions have collapsed, leading to significant losses for many Ghanaians and undermining trust in the financial system.

9. Reckless Borrowing:

Despite massive borrowing, there are few tangible infrastructure projects to show for it, raising questions about the efficient use of public funds.

10. Loss of International Investors:

Major international companies like Vodafone and The Game have left Ghana, with others like Société Générale Banks considering exits due to Dr. Bawumia’s economic mismanagement.

The Need for Genuine Leadership

Ghanaians deserve leaders who deliver on their promises and act in the best interests of the country. Dr. Bawumia’s track record suggests that his latest promises are likely more about gaining votes than genuine intention to enact positive change. The upcoming 2024 general elections are a crucial opportunity for Ghanaians to choose a leader with a proven track record of transformative leadership.

Why John Dramani Mahama as Flagbearer of the NDC Is the Right Choice

John Dramani Mahama and the NDC have shown that they are capable of delivering for the people of Ghana. Under Mahama’s leadership, Ghanaians saw significant infrastructure development, improved healthcare, and a focus on reducing the economic burden on ordinary citizens. The NDC is for the masses, committed to fostering inclusive growth and creating opportunities for all Ghanaians.

Vote for Real Change

As we approach the 2024 general elections, I urge all Ghanaians to carefully consider the track record of the NPP under Dr. Bawumia and Akufo-Addo. We cannot afford to be misled by broken promises and empty rhetoric. Vote for John Dramani Mahama and the NDC to ensure that Ghana moves toward a brighter, more prosperous future. It’s time for real change, and that change begins with your vote.

Signed,

Joel Samuel Ndede
Deputy Communications Officer, NDC, Jomoro Constituency
