Buying Past Questions for WASSCE Students is good Investment – Education Minister

Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has strongly defended the procurement of past questions for final year Senior High School students who wrote the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) last year.

He said it is an investment into the education of the students since it has had a tremendous improvement on their performance when compared to previous years.

“The procurement of these questions was funded through the Free Senior High School Account and the results of the 2020 WASSCE was tremendous compared to previous years’ WASSCE performance,” he stated.

The Minister made this known on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, when he indicated that the move is to help the final year students prepare for the 2021 WASSCE.

“The Ministry has procured 446,954 past questions from Messrs Kingdom Books and Stationery at unit price of GHS 78.00.”

And also in 2020, Government through its efforts to help students amidst COVID-19 to prepare for the examination, “procured 568,755 past questions for students to try their hands on before the actual exams.

“The Ministry of Education contracted Messrs Kingdom Books and Stationery to supply 568,755 WASSCE past questions at a contract price of GHS 33,641,043.75.”

The Education Minister was answering questions filed by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Builsa South Constituency, Dr. Clement Apaak, who wanted to know how much it cost the state to procure the past questions and whether the state will again procure for the 2021 final year students.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Parliamentary sittings for Wednesday July 14, 2021, Dr. Adutwum observed that, the Ministry’s provision of past questions to the students for free is a game changer in the rural parts of the country.
