Call Off Strike and Go Back For Negotiations- NLC To Teachers

A statement jointly signed by the unions cited setbacks in negotiating a Collective Agreement, a non-functional Scheme of Service for Teachers, delay in the distribution of the teachers’ laptops, rampant changes of the school calendar without recourse to teachers and the blockage of teachers’ salaries by the Office of Special Prosecutor.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has issued an order for the three striking teacher unions in the country to call off their industrial action to make way for a result-oriented negotiation with the government.

The order was issued by the Commission after a meeting with the disputing parties on March 26.

In the statement, the NLC said the outstanding subjects pending resolution between the employer and the employee include Continuous Professional Development Allowance; Deprived Area Allowance; Teaching/Assessment Allowance; Rent/Housing Allowance; Utility Subsidy Allowance and Transport/Commuting Allowance.

Meanwhile, concerns regarding the withheld salaries of some teachers, the final draft of the Scheme of Service and teachers’ laptops have been put to rest.

“The Respondents should call off the strike with immediate effect and notify the Commission accordingly.”

The NLC also called for negotiation in “good faith” with the parties ordered to report the outcome of the negotiations on April 17, 2024.

 

Three teacher unions including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) declared an indefinite strike action over their conditions of service on March 20, 2024.
