Commercial drivers educated on basic driving skills
Provisional data from the Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service indicate that road traffic crashes within the first four months of the year 2022 recorded an 8.8% drop in fatalities against the same period last year.
As part of efforts to minimize the increasing carnage on the roads in Ghana in the year 2022, Neat Petroleum, a wholesaler and retailer of petroleum-based products company, has embarked on a road safety advocacy programme to educate commercial drivers in Accra.
Provisional data from the Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service indicate that road traffic crashes within the first four months of the year 2022 recorded an 8.8% drop in fatalities against the same period last year.
The report indicates that 1,034 people lost their lives through road crashes last four months of the year 2021 but the 2022 figure stands at 943.
It is in line with these and many other reasons that Neat Petroleum, in an effort to augment the road safety management in Ghana, has embarked on this education campaign.
The management in its maiden edition engaged transport operators at the Madina trotro station in Accra where the drivers received knowledge on basic driving tips.
Traffic fatalities and injuries in Ghana as a result of road crashes constitute a serious public health problem.
The development has sparked a national discussion about the rising spate of fatal crashes and this has instigated Neat Petroleum Company to intensify the road safety campaign.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Neat Petroleum, Derrick Opare Asamoah, told the drivers to adhere to simple road safety issues in order to save lives and property.
He said government spends a lot on accident and so there is the need to curb such occurrences in society.
Mr. Opare Asamoah promised to extend the educational campaign to other trotro stations in the Greater Accra Region.
The Public Relation Officer, Christolite Klottey, speaking to Onua TV, emphasized the need for other companies in the energy sector to follow suit.
The Executive Management Member, Samuel Adebayo Ogugoya, equally entreated passengers not to mount unnecessary pressure on drivers while driving.
Leadership of transport operators at the Madina trotro station were elated and pledged to espouse the potential of driver education to reduce road traffic crashes.
