“We are not puppets and stooges of the West”
Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram and lead sponsor of the anti-gay bill, Sam George, has strongly criticised the United States’s stance on Parliament’s passage of the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.
According to the lawmaker, the United States can either choose to do business in Ghana with Ghanaian terms or leave.
Sam George made these comments on News Central when he was defending Parliament’s decision to pass the bill.
Since passing the bill, the United States has noted that the bill, when passed into law, will drive US investors out of the country, which in the long run will affect Ghana’s economic development.
However, Sam George noted that American businesses that operate in Ghana are not there because of LGBTQ people but because they make profits.
He also noted that it is time for Africans to accept their rights.
“We are not puppets and stooges of the West”, he stressed.
The bill, which is awaiting the president’s assent into law, seeks to frown on same-sex marriage and acts of homosexuality.
Individuals found guilty could be sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those who promote and sponsor the act could face a prison term between 3 and 5 years.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaian groups are calling on the President to quickly give assent to the bill.
