Akufo-Addo fires 24 MMDCEs; Fear grips Ministers

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to revoke the appointments of 24 Municipal and District Chief Executives over the weekend has left many Ministers troubled, especially those who have been in office since 2017.
There have been intense calls for a reshuffle over the past two years especially of the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta.
The President, however, refused to yield to those calls but the unexpected announcement of termination of 24 MMDCEs is making a lot of his Ministers very concerned.
A senior government official close to the presidency who pleaded anonymity told this paper, “The impending reshuffle was deliberately delayed to allow the Party to complete the presidential and parliamentary primaries, but I can tell you this will be massive.
President Akufo-Addo rejected previous calls to reshuffle his ministers saying there is no justification for the demand.
Speaking on North Star Radio in Tamale as part of his two-day tour of the Northern Region, the President said he is impressed with his appointees.
“Many of them for me have done outstanding work. Their output has been considerable, and that is what I look at,” he said.
“If the output measures expectations, then I don’t have any strong reasons to heed the calls,” President Akufo-Addo added.
The President also believes calls for a reshuffle sometimes have ulterior motives.
President Akufo-Addo has not done any major reshuffle since he assumed the reins of government on January 7, 2017.
With an imminent reshuffle on the table, it remains to be seen how these changes will affect the performance of government ahead of the December 7th General Election
President Nana Akufo-Addo over the weekend revoked the appointments of 24 Municipal and District Chief Executives.
In a letter addressed to Mr Dan Bowe, Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development and copied to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare, the Chief of Staff, the President wrote, “In accordance with article 243 (3) (B) of the Constitution, and section 20 (3) (B) of the Local Government Act, 2014, (Act 936), I write to inform you that I have revoked the appointments of the following persons as District Chief Executives.”
They are Martina Appiah Nyantakyi, AhafoAno North; Nii Larteh Ollenu, Amansie West; Daniel Owuredu, Nkoranza South; Alhaji Abdulai Adams, Pru East; Gmasombe Jerome Kofi Gyimah, Sene East; Joseph Aidoo, Awutu Senya West; Samuel Kwame Agyekum, Asuogyaman; Seth Asante, Atiwa West; Comfort Asante, New Juaben North; Isaac Kwadzo Buabeng, Nsawam-Adoagyiri; Daniel Alexander Nii-Noi Adumua, Adentan; Mohammed Bashiru Kamara, Ga Central.
The rest are Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, Ga East; Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, Weija Gbawe; Rashida Mahama, East Mamprusi; Emmanuel Jalulah Kajal, Krachi West; Lenwah Bright Kwame, Nkwanta South; Losina Barikisu, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba; David Akologo Amoah, Bolga East; Tahiru Issahaku Ahmed, Bawku West; Ayisha Batong Hor, Sissala West; Seth Kwasi Agbi, South Tongu; Patrick Hockson Amponteng, Amenfi Central and Dorcas Elizabeth Amoah, Nzema East.
Meanwhile the President Akufo-Addo has also nominated 26 candidates to be approved as District and Municipal Chief Executives.
The candidates are Prince DormaaAmoah, Ahafo Ano North; Oscar Asare Andoh, Amansie West; Dr. Amoateng Augustine Kwasi, Nkoranza South; Mohammed Haruna, Pru East; Samson Gbolu, Sene East; Moses Arhinful Acquah, Awutu Senya West; Nana Kweku Abban, Twifo Heman Lower Denkyira, and Mavis Opokua Akonnor, Asuogyaman.
Others are Paddy Amponsah Douglas, Atiwa West; Prof. Edward Asante Antwi, New Juaben North; Owusu Arthur Emmanuel, Nsawam-Adoagyiri; Ebenezer Doku, Adentan, Ambrose Tsegah, Ga Central, Deborah Ampofo, Ga East; Michael Danquah, Weija Gbawe; Issah Chimsi Abdulai, East Mamprusi; Bulator Kwaku Patrick, Krachi West and Felix Owusu Gyimah, Nkwanta South.
The rest are Jacob K. Dumakawe, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba; Agana Albert Akugre, Bolga East; Anania Daniel Atampuba, Bawku West; Mahamud Forkah, Sissala West; Zuh Walter Wogbemase, Adaklu; Innocent Lynford Kwesi Tetteh, South Tongu; Alex Baidoo, Amenfi Central and Eric Essien, Nzema East.
In a letter addressed to Mr Dan Botwe, Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development and copied Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare, the Chief of Staff, the President wrote, “Pursuant to my letter of 2nd February 2024, and in accordance with article 24.
(1) of the Constitution, I have made the following nominations to the office of Chief Executive of the following Municipal and District Assemblies, pending their approval by their respective assemblies.”
