Fisherman fined for Flouting Closed Season Law

The Court presided over by Her Worship Benedicta Antwi at Tema TBC District Court fined him 100 penalty units equivalent to Gh¢ 1,200 for his offense.

 

Owner of a fishing canoe named Holy FM with registration number, VR-KS-086-AVM, operating at Abeliakorpe-Aflao, has been fined and his fish confiscated.

The accused, Mr. Yaovi Akey, a 31-year-old fisherman pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea and sentenced accordingly.

The Court presided over by Her Worship Benedicta Antwi at Tema TBC District Court fined him 100 penalty units equivalent to Gh¢ 1,200 for his offense.

The offense under section 84 of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625) does not attract a term of imprisonment but a non-custodial sentence of a minimum fine of 100 penalty units to a maximum fine of 500 penalty units.

Earlier, the Assembly member of Teshie – Avedzi and two others were arrested by the Eastern Naval Command together with Fisheries Enforcement Unit on 12th July 2023 for allegedly fishing during the closed season.

Speaking in an interview on Aflao-based Holy FM monitored by Ghananewsonline.com.gh, the assembly member, Seth Kwasi Abelia said his name has been cleared off the allegations after he was able to produce the culprit, and has advised all fishermen to observe the closed season to avoid punishment.
