Fmr Minority Leader to visit Ghanasco to ascertain conditions
“Whiles keenly awaiting the report from the investigation, I call on government, the GES and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to take a comprehensive review of the infrastructure requirements and other complimentary facilities needed to support effective teaching and learning in school.
Member of Parliament for Tamale South Constituency Haruna Iddrisu is expected to visit Ghana Senior High School, which is under his jurisdiction, following viral videos of the conversion of toilets into dormitories for use by students.
The Old Students Association as well as authorities of the school have denied this, saying students only kept their chop boxes and trunks in the cubicles – originally designed as toilets – during vacation.
But since the video emerged, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has asked the Headmaster of the School, Douglas Haruna Yakubu, and the Senior Housemaster, Sayibu Fuseini, to step aside for investigations to be carried out.
The Northern Region Director of Education has been tasked to lead the investigations and report back within two weeks.
In a statement on Monday, April 17, Haruna Iddrisu, who is the immediate past Minority Leader, threw support behind GES for initiating investigations into the matter.
This he stated will give assurance to parents and the general public about the safety and well being of students in the school.
He described the conditions as captured in the viral video as “unfortunate” and “disappointing” if true.
“Whiles keenly awaiting the report from the investigation, I call on government, the GES and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to take a comprehensive review of the infrastructure requirements and other complimentary facilities needed to support effective teaching and learning in school.
“I shall be visiting the School as Member of Parliament for the Tamale South Constituency, to ascertain things for myself,” the statement concluded.
