Free SHS Students Won’t Pay ₵465 WASSCE Registration Fees- GES

“The reason is that by the time they come back to school on 17th April, they will have enough time to complete their registration. Headmasters should note that students should not be asked to go back to school because we know that students live far and near.”

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says final year students under the Free Senior High School (SHS) students will not pay the ₵465 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration fee.

The concerns arose after the West African Examination Council (WAEC) announced the fee last week

Addressing the media on April 2, the Director-General of the GES, Dr Eric Nkansah, said the fee will be absorbed by the government as part of the Free SHS policy.

“Since that news came out, a lot of parents have been asking whether everybody is going to pay. No. All students with our government secondary schools under the Free SHS programme are not required to pay that GHc465 because that money is already fully absorbed by government under the Free SHS.”

He also addressed concerns relating to the recall of final-year students who are currently on vacation by heads of some SHSs to complete their WASSCE registration process.

“We have also learnt that some of our Form 3 students who are already home on vacation have been asked by some of the schools to come back and complete their WASSCE registration. We want to say unequivocally that no student on vacation should be asked to come back to school for this registration.”

According to him, the registration process can be completed when they resume school on April 17.

“The reason is that by the time they come back to school on 17th April, they will have enough time to complete their registration. Headmasters should note that students should not be asked to go back to school because we know that students live far and near.”
