GACL Saga: Three MD’s in Five Years – Who is Next?

Barely 48 hours after the termination of the appointment of the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yaw Kwakwa, by President Akufo-Addo through the company’s board, news reports monitored by ghananewsonline.com.gh have revealed that Yaw Kwakwa is the third Managing Director of the company (GACL) to have left office within the last five years.

Before then, Charles Asare, resigned in 2017, under undue political pressure according to AviationGhana sources, after the change of government that year paving the way for the appointment of Yaw Kwakwa whl became the third Managing director of the company within the last five years to leave post.

His predecessor, John Attafuah, was relieved of his duties in a similar manner —his dismissal letter was leaked to the media before he was officially informed.

Now, Ghana as a country has to allow the limited liability company in-charge of managing all airports in the country, to have a little stability. Most importantly, it ought to be insulated from partisan political control.

Since June 2019, steps have been taken with the establishment of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA).

For GACL to return to its past glory, SIGA must be allowed the free hand to oversee this state-owned entity based on acceptable management principles and approved performance contracts.

SIGA must oversee and administer the State’s interests in Specified Entities, to ensure shareholder value, financial sustainability and good corporate governance.
