“How on earth does mere relocation of Ameri Power plant from Aboadze to Kumasi cost $35million” – NDC Quizzes

“Why will the Akufo Addo/Bawumia government waste scarce resources to recommission a power plant that has already been commissioned in 2015?

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region has raised concerns over the decision to relocate the Ameri Power Plant from the Western Region to the Ashanti Region. They have urged the government to prioritize addressing the financial challenges plaguing the power sector.

The NDC condemned the government’s plan to recommission and rename the plant, initially inaugurated in 2015 during John Mahama’s administration. They labelled the move as “another lie and deception of the clueless, dishonest, and incompetent Akufo Addo/Bawumia.”

President Akufo-Addo is set to commission the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project on Wednesday, April 17, as part of efforts to bolster system voltage and stability in the middle and northern regions. The government asserts that the plant, expected to generate a minimum of 250 megawatts, is crucial in ensuring reliability and stability in the national grid.

Ahead of the commissioning, the NDC in the Ashanti Region has called on the government to concentrate on resolving the financial hurdles in the power sector.

Addressing the media, Abass Nuruddeen, the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer for the NDC, criticized the exercise as a misallocation of resources. He questioned the need for spending $30 million to relocate the plant, suggesting that such funds could have been utilized more effectively to alleviate the challenges faced by Ghanaians.
