Mahama is a disgrace to northerners, not Bawumia – Akomea replies Fifi Kwetey

The Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has challenged General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Fifi Kwetey to search for the politician who is a disgrace to the Northern Region within his party.

According to him, long before the NDC scribe mounted the political platform to make that declaration, NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama had already been tagged with that label by another northern stalwart who happens to be a highly respected member of the NDC.

“If Fiifi Kwetey is looking for a politician who has been a ‘disgrace’ to the North, he needs not look further than in  his party, as testified by a Northern NDC politician,” he wrote on social media.

Akomea’s statement was a direct response to a video where Fifi Kwetey was seen cautioning voters in Northern Ghana against supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, branding him a “disgrace to northern Ghana.”

Akomea, in a social media post, challenged Kwetey to reflect on the actions and reputations within his own party before casting aspersions.

He highlighted a notable criticism from within the NDC itself, where former President John Dramani Mahama was described as a disgrace to the North by Martin Amidu, a respected Northern figure and former Attorney General and Minister of Justice under the NDC government.’

Amidu, known for his outspoken stance on corruption and integrity in politics, had expressed concerns in 2015 about Mahama’s tolerance of corruption, suggesting it could tarnish the electoral prospects of Northern politicians for decades.

“If Fiifi Kwetey is looking for a politician who has been a ‘disgrace’ to the North, he needs not look further than in his party, as testified by a Northern NDC politician,” Akomea asserted, referencing Amidu’s critique of Mahama’s presidency.

Amidu’s statement at the time was poignant, “…because of his behaviour, for the next 20, 30 years this country will not vote for a Northern President and he is disgracing me as a Northerner; and I don’t like it,” he added.

The exchange highlights the ongoing political tension between the NPP and NDC, as both parties vie for support in the Northern region.

Akomea’s invocation of Amidu’s past comments serves not only as a rebuttal to Kwetey’s criticisms of Bawumia but also as a reminder of the internal criticisms within the NDC regarding leadership and ethical governance.
