Minority not shielding Assin North MP; we only want due process followed – Haruna Iddrisu

Mr Quayson who is facing some criminal charges at the Accra High Court was granted a ¢100,000 bail with one surety after pleading not guilty to the charges including forgery, the deceit of a public officer, knowingly making a false declaration and perjury.

The Minority will not shield the Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson, from prosecution.

This is according to the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu who adds that the NDC MPs only want the right procedures followed in the handling of the court cases involving the MP.

Mr Quayson who is facing some criminal charges at the Accra High Court was granted a ¢100,000 bail with one surety after pleading not guilty to the charges including forgery, the deceit of a public officer, knowingly making a false declaration and perjury.

It will be recalled that the Cape Coast High Court in July 2021 annulled the Assin North Parliamentary elections after it ruled Mr Quayson was not eligible to contest the polls.

Mr Quayson has since been legally fighting to set this aside, with the matter currently pending at the Court of Appeal.

The Attorney General’s Department subsequently filed criminal charges against the MP but court officials have been unable to serve the MP with the court processes amidst allegations that a court bailiff was assaulted by the MP’s bodyguard.

Mr Quayson, who has since been evading court summons was, however, present in court on Tuesday with party stalwarts including the National Chairman and General Secretary as well as leadership of the Minority storming the courts to throw their weight behind him.

Speaking to Accra-based Joy FM after today’s court proceedings, the Tamale South MP called on the police and other relevant stakeholders to uphold the constitution at all times in their dealings with Mr Quayson.

“You heard the justices of the Supreme Court themselves at the last hearing state emphatically and strongly that the manner of service was unconstitutional.”

“Let me put it out quite clearly that at no point in time has it ever been the intention of the Honorable Gyakye Quayson or the Minority not to be accountable to the law.”

“What we have sought to question is the process and procedures allowing us to be accountable to the law and to respect the fidelity of the law. The same Gyakye Quayson was arraigned before a CID investigation panel, so ask yourself, how did that happen?”

“They came through properly through the Speaker, and he facilitated that. So if you wanted to serve him, the easy thing to do is to come through the same route of Speaker in accord with the Constitution,” he stated.
