NIC boss heaps praises on MTTD; attributes reduction in motor accidents to Directorate

The Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Justice Ofori, has heaped praises on the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) for contributing enormously to the reduction in motor accidents.
Motor accidents/crashes for the first five months of 2022 stood at 6,472, a 4.67% reduction from the previous year’s figure of 6.789 (January – May 2022).
Reported cases of injuries declined by 4.98% within the same review period from 6,967 to 6,620.
Deaths declined by 9%, from 1,250 people in January to May 2021 to 1,140 during the same period in 2022.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the Commissioner of Insurance at the opening ceremony of a 3-day orientation for newly posted National Service Scheme (NSS) personnel to the MTTD, the Commissioner noted the NSS MTTD training module by the NIC has contributed to the feat.
“Available statistics from the Police MTTD indicate that this year’s accident rate and casualties from January to October, 2022 have reduced as against same period last year. Though as a country we wish to do better to reduce the carnage on our roads, there is clear manifestation to suggest that training modules of this nature have contributed immensely to this feat,” he remarked.
“Ensuring sanity and protection on our roads are legally and mandatorily provided by two functions; the Police and insurance and our collaborative efforts are so far yielding the necessary results,” he added.
Also speaking at the opening ceremony for the NSS MTTD orientation programme was the Director-General of the MTTD, COP Francis Ebenezer Doku, who praised the NIC for continuing to undertake the training module for NSS personnel posted to the MTTD.
“This programme is geared towards adding human resource to the MTTD for the effective management of road traffic.
“It is my expectation that NSS personnel will better appreciate the police-citizen relationship and also get rid of the negative stereotype they have about the police service.
“In this 3-day training programme, participants will be educated on basic principles of insurance and the Motor Insurance Database (MID) to help check the menace of fake vehicle insurance stickers,” he remarked.
The 3-day orientation programme facilitated by the NIC, Ghana Insurance College (GIC) and MTTD,
on insurance and other aspects of road traffic regulations is supported by the NIC and facilitated by the Ghana Insurance College (GIC), borders on the basic principles of insurance and the MID which is of utmost relevance to the personnel deployed to ensure motor traffic regulations and safety on our roads.
In October 2020, the NIC launched and commenced the nationwide training of National Service Personnel posted to the MTTD.
This was further extended to cover other security agencies including the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the NIC’s insurance awareness creation drive.
The continuous training modules have the broad objective of creating insurance awareness and providing an avenue for all to develop an interest in a career in insurance.
