Organized Labour notifies police on nationwide protests against 15% VAT on electricity
“We are officially notifying you of our plan to hold demonstrations in all 16 regional capitals of Ghana on Tuesday, 13th February, 2024,”
Organized Labour has notified the Ghana Police Service formerly about their intent to hold nationwide protests in response to the proposed 15% VAT on domestic electricity consumption.
This announcement comes after Organized Labour had previously informed the government of their opposition to the introduction of VAT on electricity for consumers across the country.
The protest is in reaction to communications sent to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO), and the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, regarding the imposition of VAT on electricity.
The Minister specified that the Value Added Tax (VAT) would be applied to residential electricity users who exceed a certain threshold of consumption, beyond the limit set for lifeline tariff units.
Organized Labour is taking a firm stand by planning demonstrations in all sixteen regions of Ghana.
“We are officially notifying you of our plan to hold demonstrations in all 16 regional capitals of Ghana on Tuesday, 13th February, 2024,” stated Mr. Yaw Baah, the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), in a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
