Pressure mounts on Bawumia to state his stance on LGBTQI after Mahama’s bold declaration

Following Mahama's recent declaration, there has been heightened interest in where other prominent figures, including Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, stand on the issue.

Pressure is increasing on Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to clarify his stance on LGBTQI rights, in the wake of former President John Mahama openly declaring his opposition to same-sex marriage.

This development comes amid growing debates and discussions around LGBTQI rights in Ghana, with various public figures and political leaders sharing their views on the matter.

Former president and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, on Wednesday, publicly declared that his faith as a christian and a staunch member of the Assemblies of God church does not permit him to support same sex marriages in any form.

“i am a member of the Assemblies of God and my faith is against LGBTQI, The faith i have does not permit a man to marry a man and a woman to marry a woman. The bill in parliament has not been passed yet, The governmemr has indicated that even if it is passed he would not sign it… A man is a man and a woman is a woman, there is no confusion about that. God was clear in His mind when He was creating mankind. If you ask me, my personal faith is against LGBTQI,” Mahama stated when he met a section of the Clergy in the country.

Following Mahama’s recent declaration, there has been heightened interest in where other prominent figures, including Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, stand on the issue.

The call for Vice President Bawumia to weigh in on the matter has been echoed by advocates, activists, and members of the public, who are seeking clarity from the government’s second-in-command and a potential next president.

The issue has sparked significant public discourse, both within political circles and among the general population, reflecting the importance and sensitivity of LGBTQI rights in the Ghanaian society.

As the debate continues, attention remains focused on whether Vice President Bawumia will address the issue and provide his position on LGBTQI rights, amid the ongoing discussions and divisions surrounding this complex and multifaceted issue.
