Residents Flee From Deadly ECG Transformer At Ashongman

An electric transformer mounted in front of a house at Ashongman in the greater Accra region has forced inhabitants in the house to flee for their lives due to the danger it poses to their lives.

The transformer was mounted exactly in front of the house by an unknown contractor on behalf of the ECG without any notification and even the knowledge of the owner of the house and several efforts made to get the Electricity Company of the Ghana to at least remove the transformer or relocate it has proven futile. So it order to protect their lives inhabitant or residents in the house have fled leaving the house empty.

The high voltage transformer which has been nicknamed x the head of medusa by residents continue to threaten lives due to the heat waves the transformer emits. Besides, it has occupied the entire space used by the children as a playing ground.

Several calls have been placed to the authorities of the Electricity Company of Ghana from the Public Relations unit to the regional and district offices since 2022 but nothing has been done help.

Two years ago some high level technicians from the ECG at the Kwabenya district visited the house and met owners of the property.

Upon observations, they promised to relocate the transformer by the end of December 2022, but they failed to do it after two years
Perhaps they want some casualties to be recorded first before they respond properly or appropriately.

The owners of the facility have placed several calls to the ECG but they have refused to act.

This writer placed a call with the head of Public Affairs at ECG William Boateng to enquire about the situation and what could be done about it but he said nothing could be done about it even when a video of the transformer had been sent to him. He said for him the transformer doesn’t pose any danger.
