MP for LA Dadekotopon motivates WASSCE Candidates in her constituency
The objective is to motivate candidates for the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
Member of Parliament (MP) for the La DadeKotopon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Rita Naa Odorley Sowah, has visited Senior High Schools under her jurisdiction. The objective is to motivate candidates for the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which commenced across the country on Wednesday.
Together with the La DadeKotopon Municipal Director of Education, Habiba Kotomah, the MP interacted with the Candidates, School Heads, Invigilators, and some of the Teachers before the official commencement of the first paper which was English Language (Oral). She visited La Presbyterian Senior High School (La Presec), St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School, and the Labone Senior High School.
She admonished the student body to specifically encourage the WASSCE Candidates to give all out to pass the exams to the next level of their educational career.
She fortified the candidates to put unrelated activities behind them throughout the examination period and write all the papers once and for all.
The MP to the media in an interview that “WASSCE is important to me and as an MP for the area; I needed to motivate them to give out their best. Over the years, I have worked with them as the then MCE, so today is not different.
“When we were going round you have seen that their morals are high and so I have made them to understand that, it is not too late for them to read their books, consult friends and even teachers for extra knowledge to finish hard,” she stated.
She is hopeful of better grades this year’s candidates.
The Municipal Director of Education, Habiba Kotomah, on her part noted that they have prepared the students well enough in order to change the narrative in Greater Accra.
According to her, “for BECE in Greater Accra we (La Dadekotopon) are doing well, but when it comes to WASSCE we are always lagging behind and so this year, we put in a lot of strategies to ensure that in WASSCE also we do well”.
“….prior to this, we have encouraged them, mentored them, and sensitized them enough on dos and don’ts and what constitute examination malpractice, among others,” she stated.
In all, a total of 3,311 candidates from the four schools are writing the exams this year.
The MP was accompanied by the Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Ishmila Obodai Anaai, the Secretary, Edem Nyamador, the Organizer, Robert Mensah Edein, and the Youth Organizer, Francis Anderson.
La Dadekotopon Municipal Education office was established in June 2013. It consists of 7 circuits. It has an enrolment of 33,000 pupils in public basic schools and 44,000 pupils in private basic schools. It has 4 public senior high schools and a private SHS in the municipality.
The 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for all students, which commenced on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 has about 446,321 candidates from 965 schools with 651 public schools and 314 private schools nationwide.
The total number of candidates comprise 221,437 males and 234,884 females which is an increase of 18.78% over the 2020 figure of 375,767.
