The huge pile of refuse poses a health risk to residents, who are calling on the Assembly as a matter of urgency to attend to the issue.

Residents at Tongor Dzemeni in the South Dayi district of the Volta region are at their wits-end as to when a pile of rubbish left unattended for close to a year, now would be cleared to improve sanitation in the community. The huge pile of refuse poses a health risk to residents, who are calling on the Assembly as a matter of urgency to attend to the issue.

Dzemeni is a fishing community located along the banks of the Volta Lake in the South Dayi district of the Volta region. As is most often associated with communities along with major water bodies in the country, Dzemeni has its fair share of challenges confronting residents. However, in a situation where such challenges threaten lives and property, it becomes necessary that such challenges be given a special attention required.

This has not been the case of a refuse dumping site at Dzemeni. Refusal by the Assembly to clear rubbish at the site has resulted in the rubbish gathering momentum for close to a year. The rubbish, which is gradually turning into a mountain, poses a health risk to residents within and without the Dzemeni Township.

The stench that emanates from the rubbish at close range is quite deafening. This notwithstanding, some people found it safe to sell and perform other activities close to the rubbish site.

Some residents who spoke to GBC News expressed concern about the attitude of Officials of the Assembly, who seemed to have turned a blind eye to the situation, despite being notified

Sanitation generally within the Dzemeni Township is not encouraging. Most gutters and drainage systems are filled and choked with stagnant water, plastics and rubber materials in the full glare of the people and the Authorities.
