Work Progresses On Tarkwa Road

They could not fathom why the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality being the leading producer of gold which generates huge revenue for the government, could have deplorable roads.

The Akufo-Addo-led government has been praised by residents of Tarkwa-Nsuaem in the Western Region for the progress of work on the 66 kilometer Tarkwa to Agona-Nkwanta road reconstruction project.

A visit to the site recently revealed that the project was progressing steadily. The first phase has been asphalted and facilitating the smooth movement of people, goods and services.

The reconstruction work is being carried out by Gabriel Couto-Rango Construction, a Portuguese construction company.

The stretch serves as a major route for the transportation of cocoa, bauxite and manganese among others by heavy duty vehicles to the Takoradi Harbour for export.

Attempts to get some workers of the construction company for the percentage of completion proved futile. However, the residents said they were happy and would forever be grateful to the government for the initiative.

“We are also grateful to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, George Mireku Duker for the work done so far. Successive governments promised, but failed to re-construct the road,” they asserted.

They have therefore resolved to reward the government by voting massively for the ruling party in the next general elections.

The Tarkwa-Agona-Nkwanta Highway has been a source of worry to many residents of Tarkwa and road users.

Apart from the deep potholes which cause discomfort to commuters, petty traders who plied their trade along the road and people who live by the road, had to endure the inconvenience of dust.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that part of the reasons previous governments could not construct the road was finance, but the current government made a headway in that regard.

Prior to that, chiefs and people in the Tarkwa area organised several protests during which they blocked the stretch, which brought major economic activities to a standstill.

The chiefs and people rescinded their decision to continually block the road after they saw the contractor presently on the road.

Meanwhile, the MP for the area, Mireku Duker has appealed to drivers and pedestrians using the road to cautiously and carefully follow all road construction indicators on the stretch.
