AFCON 2023: Ghanaian supporters say $400 payment not for boycotting reasons

Also the following day, after getting our rooms we were given $400 each so we don’t know where this news is coming from,” Abraham Nkansah conveyed to 3News on the sidelines of the conference.

The Ghana Supporters Union has confirmed that its members received $400 each, but clarified that it wasn’t due to threats to boycott their support for the Black Stars.

Abraham Nkansah, speaking at a press conference in Abidjan on Wednesday morning refuted media reports suggesting that the supporters were lured with the amount to prevent a supposed threat of boycotting their support for the Black Stars in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ahead of their next game against Egypt.

Ghana’s loss to Cape Verde in the first game of the tournament sparked frustration among fans, leading to criticisms and speculations.

The Ghana Supporters Union emphasised that the funds were not an attempt to dissuade a boycott but a standard allocation.

“It’s about a particular media having it that we the supporters boycotted to show up for Ghana’s game against Egypt, threatening to get back home to Ghana and when we started the threatening, the ministry gave us $400. But that is not true because we have been taken good care of by the ministry in terms of food and everything from day one. Also the following day, after getting our rooms we were given $400 each so we don’t know where this news is coming from,” Abraham Nkansah conveyed to 3News on the sidelines of the conference.

He further emphasised the commitment of the supporters to cheer the team on in their next clash against Egypt.

“We are okay over here and you can ask the rest of the supporters team,” he added reaffirming the supporters’ commitment to cheering the team on in their next clash against Egypt.

Ghana face Egypt on Thursday in a crucial match as both teams seek their first win in the ongoing tournament.
