EC on Yendi: We are waiting for the NPP to take a decision

Despite the fact that no official declaration of results were done, both candidates, Farouk Mahama incumbent MP and Abibata Shani, have independently claimed victory in the contest.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that, a decision on the next step of the Parliamentary Primary in the Yendi constituency is left in the bosom of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make.

Counting of votes by officials of the Electoral Commission to determine winner of Saturday’s parliamentary candidature election was disrupted amidst the destruction of ballot papers by some disgruntled members and supporters.

Officials of the EC were allegedly beaten and had to run for their lives making it impossible for the official declaration of the results.

Despite the fact that no official declaration of results were done, both candidates, Farouk Mahama incumbent MP and Abibata Shani, have independently claimed victory in the contest.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe emphasized that no official winner has yet to be determined in the Yendi contest.

“The feedback from the region is that we were not able to declare the results there,” Dr Quaicoe said.

“From the Electoral Commission’s point of view, we did not complete the process… Like I said, the party is conducting and we are supervising, so the party will have to take a decision”.

The NPP Parliamentary Primaries in constituencies where the party has sitting Members of Parliament has recorded 28 casualties.

28 sitting Members of Parliament failed in their bid to retain the NPP’s ticket as Parliamentary candidates in the December 2024 Elections.

Their lost has generated concerns about the potential adverse effects on the functioning of the law-making even as government business in concern.

Parliament is expected to reconvene on February 6, 2024 for the commencement of the 4th session of the 8th Parliament.
