NIC, DVLA Educate Transport Operators at Aflao
The workshop which came off on Friday February 23, was aimed at educating the participants on Motor Vehicle insurance and the processes involved in assessing claims in times of motor accidents.
The National Insurance Commission (NIC) in collaboration with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Division (DVLA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has held a day’s workshop for drivers and transport owners at the Aflao Border in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region.
The workshop which came off on Friday February 23, was aimed at educating the participants on Motor Vehicle insurance and the processes involved in assessing claims in times of motor accidents.
Volta regional manager of the NIC, David Afenyo, addressing the participants, said, the commission is mandated to ensure effective administration, supervision, regulation, monitoring, and control of the business of insurance to protect policyholders and the insurance industry.
He explained hat the third-party motor insurance cover pays on behalf of the insured or the driver in respect of a legal liability to third parties resulting from an accident caused by his or her vehicle.
According to him, the third-party policy covers the death of or bodily injury to any person, and/or damage to property belonging to someone other than the insured- and the death of or bodily injury to a member of the insured’s household or any other occupants.
He said, the policy pays compensation to the driver for bodily injury or death.
Afenyo also encouraged drivers to always check the validity or authenticity of motor insurance and other documents before going on the road by dialing the short code (*920*57#)
He further appealed to the driver unions to not allow any vehicle without insurance load passengers from the terminals.
Afenyo condemned the situation where most people drive on the roads with no insurance for their vehicles whiles others also drive with fake motor insurance stickers, making it difficult to get the accurate number of vehicles on the road.
Ketu South Divisional Police Commander, ACP James Anaman, expressed the command’s appreciation to the facilitators of the workshop and called for further collaboration between the Police MTTD and other relevant institutions in ensuring a safer and better transport sector in the country.
He gave the assurance that the Police would ensure that all laws governing the sector are enforced to protect lives and that the Police Service is always ready to help and collaborate with the National Insurance Commission on its mandate.
ACP Anaman bemoaned the spate of road accidents in the country and called for efforts to stem the carnage on the roads.
“People have lost parents, children, siblings, and other relatives through a motor crash. Where will these people receive compensation?
Some of these people were also breadwinners for their families and their deaths bring untold hardships to their families,” he said.
He further advised the drivers to renew their driving licenses and the insurance before they expired to avoid falling foul of the law.
