Bawumia firmly rejects LGBTQ in Eid message

“Therefore, I cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocably forbid. All the major religious traditions in Ghana (Christianity and Islam) are opposed to this practice and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah,”

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has made a resolute statement rejecting LGBTQ practices in Ghana during his address at the observation of Eid prayers in Kumasi.

In his public commentary on the issue, Dr Bawumia expressed unequivocal opposition to LGBTQ, aligning his stance with Ghanaian cultural norms, religious beliefs (specifically Islam), and societal values that disapprove of homosexuality.

Addressing thousands of Muslims, Dr Bawumia emphasized his disapproval of LGBTQ, stating that his view reflects the teachings of Islam and the Holy Quran, which expressly forbid same-sex acts and marriages.

“As a Muslim, my faith is strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’,” Dr. Bawumia asserted, underlining the consistent opposition to LGBTQ across major religious traditions in Ghana, including Christianity and Islam.

He affirmed that he would maintain this stance as President, echoing the sentiments expressed by Ghana’s Parliament, which recently passed a robust anti-LGBTQ Bill awaiting Presidential approval.

“Therefore, I cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocably forbid. All the major religious traditions in Ghana (Christianity and Islam) are opposed to this practice and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah,” he said.

Despite Parliament’s support for the bill, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cited constitutional challenges raised by human rights activists as a barrier to signing it into law.
