Ignore increments in transport fares; It’s illegal – GPRTU to commuters

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have denied claims making rounds that they have increased transport fares.
According to a statement issued on April 11, 2024, commuters are advised against accepting any unapproved increases in transport fares until official approval is granted.
This statement follows an announcement by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana regarding a proposed 30% hike in transport fares, scheduled to take effect on Saturday, April 13.
But in a joint release to dissociate themselves from news of the increment, the GPRTU and the GRTCC reiterated that any fare adjustments made outside the parameters outlined by the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares are deemed illegal and should be disregarded by commuters.
Moreover, they underscored their ongoing efforts to engage with stakeholders and the Ministry of Transport to conduct a thorough assessment of the various cost components involved.
“We are by this statement, urging the Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the Station Welfare committees to ensure compliance with the existing fares as no such decision has been taken regarding any fare increment.
“We also want to urge all drivers to abide by this directive and have confidence in the leadership. We will continue to push for the welfare of transport operators.”
