Suhuyini considering a return to Radio Gold when it is finally restored

The station which is a known affiliate of the opposition NDC, has been off air together with another sister station Radio XYZ and some 131 stations other across the country.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tamale North constituency Alhassan S. Suhuyini, has hinted his intention to go back and work with Radio Gold, while performing his duties as a legislator.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentarian says he will want to work with the station again after the National Communications Authority (NCA) announced a promise to restore the license of the Laterbiokorshie based radio station.

According to the former host of the station’s current affairs show Alhaji and Alhaji, he is set to ask permission from the Speaker, Alban Bagin to take up a show after the station begins transmission.

Recall that the license of Radio Gold was revoked by the NCA in 2018 following claims that authorities failed to renew it license for years.

The station which is a known affiliate of the opposition NDC, has been off air together with another sister station Radio XYZ and some 131 stations other across the country.

At the time, several efforts to get these stations back on air were refused. The station in February this year lost it founder and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Sintim Baffoe Bonnie.

In a sudden u-turn, on Tuesday October 12, 2021, the NCA in a press statement announced it decision to restore the licenses of these affected radio stations with certain conditions.

Reacting to the news on TV3’s Newday programme on Wednesday, Suhuyini commended the new board.

“The earlier decision to close it was based on political considerations, I am happy the new board thinks differently. There is a new board in place and maybe they think differently, they are more progressive and we must commend the new board for the decision.

It was actually the first thing the new board considered when they were constituted and set up a committee of the board to examine the petitions that had come to their notice on this matter”, he said on the New Day show.

The MP criticized the decision to close down the stations in the first place, saying it was “needless”, and “politically motivated” and a “blot on our democracy, especially at a time when the so called lover of the media and free speech was President of Ghana”.

“We hope that the stations involved will also submit themselves to whatever processes and procedures that the NCA will outline for them and if they have to comply with whatever requirements they have to comply with in order to restore stations like radio Gold, radio XYZ and some other stations”.
